Let's Talk About the Basics

After many years of fashion mishaps and shamefully unforgiving school photos, a girl comes to know the importance of having everyday basics in her closet. Some parts of your wardrobe will just never let you down, and relying on them can help ensure that you won't be embrassed of your current style choices 5 years from now. Keep these 9 essentials in mind when quickly running to the store or packing for a mini summer vacation.

1. A pair of high waisted shorts

High waisted shorts look great on just about anyone. I love slipping into a pair when I'm feeling a little bloated or after skipping a couple of morning workouts. They do wonders for your shape, and can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the shoes and top that you pair them with. Try jean for a daytime look or black rayon for a night out.

2. White, black, and nude camis

It's difficult to find a time where see-thru blouses are appropriate (besides when the hubby comes home from a long day at work). Because so many of the cutest blouses in stores today are sheer, plain white, black, and nude camis are a total must have, especially for work attire! Throw one on under your favorite top if you're feeling uncomfortable.

3. A pair of strappy black or brown sandals

Because they go with everything! Strappy sandals can bring some playfulness to an otherwise simple outfit, and they're perfect for days when you don't want to wear sneakers but will be doing a lot of walking. I'm a huge fan of knee-high gladiator sandals. (I don't care what my husband says about them!)

4. A loose maxi dress

Maxis are great for mild to moderate weather days. They're incredibly comfortable, and you can opt for a dramatic back if you want to make a statement. And who doesn't love an outfit that'll hide the fact that you haven't shaved in a few days?

5. A loose blouse

Because there are so many ways to wear them! They can be dressed down by keeping them untucked on top of a pair of your favorite jeans or dressed up by tucking them into a pair of high waisted shorts or skirt. A loose blouse is super comfortable for running errands in but can also help to keep you from looking like you just rolled out of bed.

6. A pair of boyfriend jeans

Are you guys sensing a pattern here :P? Clearly, I love to dress for comfort. Few things rival boyfriend jeans in the comfort department. That being said, I still pride myself in looking put together, and boyfriend jeans make just enough of a statement while simultaneously giving off a relaxed vibe. A word to the wise: be careful not to choose a pair that's completely lacking structure. They can easily add weight to your beautiful shape!

7. A pair of comfortable wedges

A few extra inches can do wonders for any short or average height gal. I love the definition that I see in my thighs and calves when I wear a cute pair of wedges. You know what's even more awesome about wedges?! You guessed it... they're COMFORTABLE! Wedges are the perfect way to lengthen yourself without making your poor feet suffer, and they can easily make a pair of jeans and a t-shirt look much more sophisticated.

8. A self-adhevsive, backless bra

I cannot sing the praises of self-adhesive bras enough. I wear a lot of low back or backless clothing, so these things have become a staple of my wardrobe. Heaven sent? I think so! If you're lucky enough to have cute, perky boobs, you may not require a bra at all. Alas, I am not one of those lucky ladies, and leaving the house without a bra on is simply not an option for me. These little babies provide support and allow you to be the only one who knows when the turkey's done, if you know what I mean.

9. A nude half slip/nude underwear

The majority of my closet is white, black, and gray. The thing about white dresses and skirts is that they can be double lined and still be sheer. Nude panties are a must if you have intentions of keeping your undergarments private while wearing a white skirt or dress. And on laundry day, a nude half slip will help ensure that no one else can see that all of your nude panties are in the wash ;).
